The first step is to find your electrical panel. In most homes, the electrical panel is located in a utility room, basement, or garage. Once you've identified the general area, look for a gray metal or plastic panel door with a handle. It usually has a label such as "Electrical Panel," "Circuit Breaker Box," or "Main Breaker Box" on or near the door. Familiarize yourself with the location to quickly access it when needed in the future.
Before opening the electrical panel, make sure your hands and the surrounding area are dry to prevent electric shock. Also make sure there are NO scorch marks, smoke, or burning smells. Carefully grip the panel door handle and gently pull it towards you. Some panels might have a latch or screws that need to be undone first. Once opened, you'll see the interior components, including switch-like circuit breakers, bus bars, and neutral wires. Take a moment to observe the layout and familiarize yourself with the various parts.
Inside the electrical panel, you'll find a series of circuit breakers. These switches protect your home's electrical system by interrupting the flow of electricity in case of overloads, short circuits, or other electrical issues. When there is unusual electrical activity in a particular electrical circuit, the respective circuit breaker will "trip" into the OFF position.
These circuit breakers are usually labeled. For instance, the circuit breaker responsible for the utility room may be labeled as such, and the one connected to the master bedroom will be labeled as well. There is also a main circuit breaker, located at the top or bottom of the panel. The main circuit breaker controls the entire electrical supply to your home or business.
Electrical panels can be incredibly dangerous. A faulty or damaged electrical panel can pose significant risks to your home's electrical system, and it can cause electrical fires, electrocutions, and so on.
If you notice buzzing or crackling noise coming from the electrical panel, or if you see rust and burn marks or sense heat, then practice extreme caution! Frequently tripping circuit breakers and flickering lights are also causes for concern.
If you are concerned about your electrical panel, then play it safe and call a licensed electrician. The professionals at Mr. Electric are always ready to help. Call us today to speak with a courteous member of our team.
