How to Properly Read Your Electrical Panel

Step 1: Identify and Locate the Electrical Panel

The first step is to find your electrical panel. In most homes, the electrical panel is located in a utility room, basement, or garage. Once you've identified the general area, look for a gray metal or plastic panel door with a handle. It usually has a label such as "Electrical Panel," "Circuit Breaker Box," or "Main Breaker Box" on or near the door. Familiarize yourself with the location to quickly access it when needed in the future.

Step 2: Open the Electrical Panel

Before opening the electrical panel, make sure your hands and the surrounding area are dry to prevent electric shock. Also make sure there are NO scorch marks, smoke, or burning smells. Carefully grip the panel door handle and gently pull it towards you. Some panels might have a latch or screws that need to be undone first.
