Common Electrical Issues for Property Owners

Electrical problems can range from minor inconveniences to major hazards. They can occur anywhere, whether in newly constructed homes or older buildings. Here are some of the most common examples that can serve as a warning sign that an electrical repair is needed:

Electrical Repair
  • Frequent circuit breaker trips? This is likely a sign of overloading. Excessive demand on the circuit can cause the breaker to trip to protect the wiring from overheating.
  • Dimming or flickering lights? This may also suggest an overloaded circuit or possibly loose or defective wiring.
  • Are outlets not working? It might be due to a tripped circuit breaker or a blown fuse. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters outlets are particularly sensitive, and if they stop working, they may need resetting or replacement.
  • Electrical shocks when using appliances? A professional can determine if there's a problem with the wiring or the device itself.
  • Burning smells or sparking? This should be cause for serious concern as it can indicate dangerous problems like faulty wiring or a potential fire hazard.

When to Hire a Professional Electrician

While it's great to be hands-on, some tasks require a professional touch. Electricity is not something to experiment with because even small mistakes can be costly and dangerous. Recognizing the appropriate situations to hire a professional electrician can save significant time, and money, and ensure your safety. Instances such as frequent circuit breaker trips, flickering lights, and frequent replacement of blown fuses signify a need for expert intervention. Additionally, undertaking home renovation projects, installing new appliances, or experiencing a total loss of power also calls for professional help. Delaying professional assistance can actually make the problem worse, leading to more costly repairs or posing serious safety risks. So, in these situations, reaching out to a licensed electrician isn't just a good idea, it's a necessity.

Maintaining Your Home's Electrical System

A well-maintained electrical system is a safe one. Regular check-ups and maintenance can prevent potential hazards and prolong the life of your system. Test your outlets regularly using a voltage tester. This device can indicate if the outlet is functioning correctly and if the wiring is properly grounded. Inspect your electrical panel. Look for signs of rust or scorch marks that could indicate moisture or overheating. Check the cords and plugs of your appliances for signs of wear or damage and replace them promptly if necessary. In addition to your own checklist, make sure you schedule a professional electrical inspection at least once a year. Experienced electricians will have the training and equipment needed to spot any dangers or potential repair issues.

Our Customers Love our Services

John was on time, explained the issue I was having, offered me a couple of options, and then repaired the switch that was giving me problems, following my preferences of the choices he had given me.  He was pleasant, professional, and did a great job.  Would not hesitate to  use Mr. Electric again!

Austin, electrician and his teammate we’re great! Both were punctual, courteous, and very informative in explaining the situation and their recommendations to replace a bad breaker in our panel.  There was NO frivolous attempt up-sale to items we didn’t need and they were straight to the point honest in their recommendation. In the end, I would described the customer service Austin and his teammate provided me as, AWESOME! Being a new home owner, I am glad I have found  this company and will be using them any future electrical needs!

Outstanding communication and very professional service.  I would highly recommend Mr. Electric.  Received both e-mails and texts on appointment to include a photo and short bio of the actual electrician (Brad Mason) who would be doing the work.  Wish all home service providers did the same.  Brad was on time (actually a few minutes early).  He installed 30AMP breaker and associated RV plug in our garage.  To avoid any sheetrock repairs it was necessary for him to drop the line to the house electric panel through a wall with foam insulation, with very limited head/body clearance for him to work.  No mess left behind from the actual plug installation on another wall.

Rick from Mr. Electric arrived when expected and quickly diagnosed the problem.  He recommended a solution and gave us a proposal for solving the problem.  We asked when he could do the work and how long would it take.  He said he could do the job that day and it would take 4 or 5 hours.  The price was reasonable, and we told him to get started.  He did a very good job, neat and within the estimated time.  The invoice amount for the job was was the same as the proposal amount.  We are planning on having Mr. Electric and hopefully Rick do more work in the near future to upgrade our home's 50+ year old electrical system.
